SenzaGen granted its first patent for GARD™potency

SenzaGen's patent application that protects the biomarker signature to measure how strongly allergenic a substance is, has now been granted in Europe. The patent is SenzaGen's first patent in the area of potency classification. The patent's validity extends to 2036.

The technology of SenzaGen's patent is implemented in the company's testing application, which for the first time makes it possible to measure the allergenicity of chemical substances, so-called potency classification, without animal research.

“Getting this patent on the European market is commercially interesting, as there is a ban within the EU on the sale of animal-tested cosmetic products. Furthermore, to quantify how strong the allergenic effect is according to CLP / GHS is a requirement in the EU chemical regulation REACH. As the only company in the world, SenzaGen can now offer an animal-free test method for this”, says Anki Malmborg Hager, CEO of SenzaGen.

SenzaGen’s IP strategy is to protect the company’s technology in all geographically important markets. Already granted in Europe, China and Hong Kong, patent applications for GARD™skin are currently being processed by the patent authorities in countries where animal testing is prohibited or where a ban is expected to be introduced, including the United States, Canada and India. In addition, the patent portfolio includes several ongoing patent applications for GARD™potency and other GARD™ products.

SenzaGen’s GARD™ product portfolio consists of a set of allergy tests with industry leading performance and accuracy. The tests are performed on human cells in test tubes (in vitro) in combination with artificial intelligence, and replace animal experiments for the cosmetics, chemical and pharmaceutical industries for their tests on whether chemical substances in products can be allergenic.

SenzaGen receives new order of SEK 0.5 m from a recurring customer

SenzaGen has received an order for the allergy test platform GARD® valued at approximately SEK 0.5 million. The order is from a recurring customer with its own product development facility. Deliveries are planned to take place gradually during 2019.

The order includes SenzaGen's animal-free tests to assess whether chemical substances in products can cause allergic reactions to skin (GARD™skin) and in the respiratory tract (GARD™air). SenzaGen is the only company that can offer a test for respiratory allergies GARD™air. The customer will use the tests during product development to investigate whether chemical substances in their products could be allergenic. The combination of the two tests makes it possible to avoid substances with varying allergenic effects.

The order confirms that SenzaGen's animal-free method plays an important role for customers with their own product development pipeline, and specifically proves the great interest in GARD™air. The global industry for risk assessment of chemical substances seeks alternative testing methods that are more precise, ethical, provide more information, and in the long run cost-effective.

“This is a strategically important order from a customer who previously evaluated us and is now ordering a larger number of tests. The combination of skin and respiratory allergy tests is a unique offer on the market and gives customers a more comprehensive risk assessment with the possibility to identify risk of varying types of allergies. With a growing interest in our animal-free method and orders that increase in size, we look forward to continuing to contribute to the development of safe everyday products”, says Anki Malmborg Hager, CEO of SenzaGen.

EU highlights SenzaGen’s animal-free test – the world’s first of its kind to assess whether chemical substances can cause respiratory allergies

Today, International Asthma Day is being recognized worldwide. Asthma is a global health problem – over 300 million have a diagnosis and nearly 1 million Swedes are affected – a number expected to increase. The EU has invested in the development of the world's first in-vitro test for respiratory sensitization. GARD®air was developed by the Swedish company SenzaGen and predicts whether chemical substances can cause allergic reactions in the airways. The test, which is based on Artificial Intelligence and Genomics, enables not only development of safe products but also preventative measures – something that has not been feasible before. Prior to the EU election, GARD®air has been chosen by the EU for a special campaign on how EU funds are used to create jobs and growth.

Genetic background and lifestyle are factors that can cause asthma, but the working environment can also be responsible for the condition. Airway allergies can be caused by handling of harmful substances, such as different types of chemicals, in daily work. Hitherto, there have been no animal- free tests for determining the presence of chemicals that can cause allergic reactions in the airways.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Association, many asthma sufferers are diagnosed already in childhood, but equally a large number are also affected as adults – between 10 and 15 per cent of them get asthma because of their working environment. One reason behind this can be re-activated childhood asthma, but people who have never displayed symptoms previously, can also be affected.

For professionals working in manufacturing plants in the cosmetics, chemical and pharmaceutical industries it is important that the chemicals they handle are tested for how they may affect the respiratory tract. This goes for other professional groups too, such as hairdressers, bakers, painters, floor layers and other types of craftsmen. The focus on healthier workplaces in the EU is a driver for safer products and preventative measures.

There is currently a great need for tests in several different industries. GARD®air, developed by Swedish company SenzaGen, which was launched in the autumn of 2018, makes it possible to predict the risk of causing hypersensitivity with high reliability. Using GARD®air, it is possible not only to develop better and safer products, but also not least to be able to offer employees a safe production and work environment.

“When developing for example pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, risk assessment and safety tests are essential for securing the release of safe products to consumers. Furthermore, the risks associated with the production itself should also be evaluated. In cases where a hazardous substance cannot be replaced or avoided, we provide the employer with the knowledge needed to protect the staff in the best way. With the help of GARD®air, it is possible to pro-actively create a safer working environment,” says Anki Malmborg Hager, CEO of SenzaGen.

The development of GARD®air was funded by the EU research initiative Horizon 2020. In conjunction with the EU elections 2019, the EU Commission has chosen GARD®air for a special campaign on how the EU funds are used to create jobs and growth. The campaign takes place during May and June. For more information about the campaign, visit www.europa.eu/investeu and https://europa.eu/investeu/projects/new-kind-allergy-test_en.

SenzaGen granted additional patent in Asia

SenzaGen today announced that the South Korean Patent Office (KIPO) has approved SenzaGen's patent application for GARD™skin. The new patent gives SenzaGen a strong intellectual property position in several strategically important markets.

The granted patent is valid until October 2031 and protects the genetic signature that forms the basis of SenzaGen's animal-free test for whether chemicals can cause skin allergies. South Korea is a key market in Asia with expected strong growth following a ban on animal testing on cosmetic products that started in 2017.

“For a technology-driven company, it is of the utmost importance that we continuously develop our patent strategy and safeguard our most valuable assets. The patent for GARD™skin protects the method that SenzaGen's business is built on and strengthens our long-term and global competitiveness”, says Anki Malmborg Hager, CEO of SenzaGen.

SenzaGen has a well-developed IP strategy to protect current and future innovations in important markets where the company markets or plans to market its tests. Market data show that the need for alternative testing methods is growing around the world as bans to use animals are introduced in more countries, thus boosting the market potential of SenzaGen's animal-free testing method. SenzaGen takes a first step into China – cooperates with leading expert

SenzaGen (Nasdaq First North: SENZA) has initiated a partnership with Guangzhou Chn-Alternative Biotechnology Co., Ltd (CHNALT), a leading provider of alternative, animal-free testing methods in China. The new collaboration aims to establish local networks and ensure SenzaGen with its GARD™ genome-based testing method has a strong position as China moves towards introduction of animal-free chemical testing methods. China is one of the world's largest markets, with an expected ban on animal experiments in the cosmetics industry, for example.

Dr Shu-jun Cheng is the CEO of CHNALT and one of China's leading toxicologists and key opinion leaders when it comes to alternative, animal-free testing methods. He is a professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, one of China's most prestigious universities and research centers.

“We are very pleased to be able to initiate a formal collaboration with such an active and well-respected champion of animal-free testing in China. Dr. Cheng is a strong voice and has been driving the development of alternative testing methods in China for many years. As SenzaGen’s partner, he can offer expertise and direct contact with industry and gradually establish GARD as the first-choice method for animal-free testing. We see many opportunities arising and this collaboration will ensure we are fully prepared the day the market is ready for our products”, says Anki Malmborg Hager, CEO of SenzaGen.

SenzaGen's strategy is to establish strong partnerships in markets where animal testing is prohibited or where a ban is expected to be introduced. So far, animal data are mostly compulsory for allergy testing of substances in China, but there are strong forces for introducing alternative methods and in the long term a ban.

“We are looking forward to driving the change within the industry and academia together with SenzaGen. Our ambition is to make alternative methods accepted for chemicals and cosmetics testing in China. We also firmly believe that GARD assays, as next generation genome-based testing methods, will serve as high-performance tools supporting the research and development of safer, allergy-free products”, says Shu-jun Cheng, CEO of CHNALT.

GARD™ is a genome-based test that has higher reliability than other available test methods on the market. The test gives customers important safety information about the risk of chemical substances causing allergies in humans.

About GARD®

GARD® is a group of tests for assessing chemical skin sensitizers. The tests make use of genetic biomarkers for more than 200 genes which cover the entire immune reaction and are relevant to predicting the risk of hypersensitivity. The tests have over 90 percent reliability.

This compares with the current predominant test method, experiments on mice, which has an accuracy of 70-75 percent. SenzaGen's tests are also capable of measuring the potency of a substance's allergenic properties. Consequently, GARD tests provide a much more comprehensive basis for determining whether a substance should be classified as an allergen than current testing methods.

About SenzaGen

SenzaGen makes it possible to replace animal experiments with in vitro genetic testing to determine the allergenicity of the chemicals we come into contact with in our daily lives, such as for example in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food products and dyes. The company's patented tests are the most reliable on the market and provide more information than traditional evaluation methods. We ourselves sell the tests in Sweden and the USA, and we sell through partners in several other countries. Over the next few years the company will expand geographically, make alliances with more distribution partners and launch further unique tests. SenzaGen has its headquarters in Lund in Sweden and a subsidiary in Delaware USA. For more information visit www.senzagen.com
