About GARD™
GARD consists of a group of tests for analyzing chemicals’ ability to start an allergic reaction in humans. The tests are performed on human cells in test tubes (in vitro) in combination with artificial intelligence. By analyzing hundreds of markers, GARD generates large amounts of data and delivers results with over 90 percent accuracy. This can be compared to today’s standard method – tests on animals – which only achieves 70-75 percent accuracy. The product portfolio consists of tests for skin and respiratory allergy: GARD™skin, GARD™air, GARD™potency and GARD™skin Medical Device.

About SenzaGen AB (publ)
SenzaGen’s technology enables replacement of animal experiments with genetic testing in test tubes for determining the allergenicity of the chemicals we come into contact with in our daily lives, such as those in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food products and dyes. The company’s patented tests are the most reliable on the market and provide more information than traditional evaluation methods. SenzaGen sells direct in Sweden and the US, and through partners in several other countries. SenzaGen AB is listed on Nasdaq First North in Stockholm (ticker: SENZA) and FNCA Sweden AB, +46(0)8-528 00 399 info@fnca.se, is the company’s Certified Adviser.

SenzaGen receives order of SEK 0.6 million from new global customer

SenzaGen will assess the sensitizing hazards of chemicals for a new global customer with in-house product development. The assignment includes SenzaGen's tests to assess whether chemical substances can cause allergic reactions in skin (GARD[™]skin) or in the respiratory tract (GARD[™]air) with a value of approximately SEK 0.6 million. The tests will be carried out at SenzaGen's laboratory in Lund.

The customer has its headquarters in Europe where research and development have a central role. With the combination of GARD tests, the customer can for the first time identify substances with various allergy-causing effects during product development, which contributes to cost savings for the company and safer products to the society.

“This assignment is important for several reasons. We now begin to see the results of our sales efforts and from the new commercial organization that we started to build during the fall. The fact that the customer wants to test chemicals for both skin and respiratory allergies makes this an important reference order,” says Axel Sjöblad, CEO of SenzaGen.

SenzaGen’s test platform GARD targets companies looking to optimize their in vitro testing strategy; increasing the accuracy of their test results while avoiding animal testing. Through its precision and reliability, GARD improves the quality of customers’ decision-making and contributes to increased product safety in people’s everyday lives while reducing the number of animal experiments. SenzaGen is the only company that can offer a non-animal, so called in vitro test, for identification of chemical respiratory allergens.

SenzaGen presents a new commercial organization and a new financial target

The evolution of SenzaGen in recent years has seen the company change from a research organization to one with a strong focus on commercialization. Recently, a new CEO was appointed, and the company now announces a brand new commercial organizational structure with increased focus on marketing and sales.

In the past two months, SenzaGen's strategic plan, business goals and prioritized activities have been evaluated. A first result of this work is the establishment of a new commercial organization and a new financial target.

“The first step in the commercialization is an increased focus on collaboration with existing and potential customers, and an organization that enables this approach. It is clear that the company's platform of alternative methods meets the market's need for accurate, ethical and cost-effective methods that replace animal testing. However, commercializing a research company within life science takes time and our analysis leads to us reaching break-even in 2022," says Axel Sjöblad, CEO of SenzaGen.

An organization with increased focus on marketing and sales
The commercial activities will be led directly by SenzaGen's CEO Axel Sjöblad. Peter Nählstedt, Director of the Board of SenzaGen since 2018 and former CEO of Probi AB, has been appointed Acting Sales Manager. Tina Dackemark Lawesson takes the overall responsibility for Marketing and Communications and Anna Chérouvrier Hansson manages Business Development and the recruitment of distributors and licensing partners.

Break-even 2022
The new financial target to reach break-even in 2022 was adopted by SenzaGen's Board of Directors on September 19, 2019 and replaces the previous financial targets.

“When Axel took office, he was assigned the task of evaluating SenzaGen's strategy, business goals and sales potential, a work he had previously done successfully as CEO of BioGaia. His business analysis confirms our strategy and business model and suggests that the company implements a new and clearer commercial structure. This results in a minor shift in the profitability target since time is needed to give the sales organization an opportunity to deliver and to reach out with our cutting-edge technology. The Board supports this change, which will be led by a strong team with proven track record," says Carl Borrebaeck, Chairman of the Board of SenzaGen.

SenzaGen expands its product portfolio with a test for the Medical Devices market

SenzaGen today announced an expansion of its product portfolio with the launch of GARD™skin Medical Device – a new test to assess whether medical devices can cause skin allergies. Regulatory changes are already underway in the market, which will mean increased requirements for product safety. Together with the ongoing trend towards reducing animal testing in general, this increases the need for alternative testing methods. The launch of GARD™skin Medical Device will take place at the Eurotox congress in Helsinki on September 8-11, 2019.

The Medical Devices market is a large and very interesting market for the company. The target group for GARD™skin Medical Device is initially medical device companies that perform sensitization tests during their product development and have high quality and safety requirements for the risk assessment related to their materials. With this test, SenzaGen meets the needs of an additional customer group and strengthens its position in the global market for cell-based in vitro tests.

“With our test method we can offer the industry a cost efficient and better method which gives more accurate results without animal testing. By identifying strategically important product development customers, we can already now generate sales and help them prepare for when the new regulations are in place. The ultimate goal is to see the test method being part of the international ISO standard so that it can be used instead of animal testing when registering medical devices,” says Axel Sjöblad, CEO of SenzaGen.

Increased demand for care and technological advances drive the need for a new generation of medical devices. The global Medical Devices market is estimated to be worth $410 billion in 2023 with an annual increase of 4.5% from 2018 to 2023. All medical devices that come into physical contact with the patient must undergo risk assessment for allergy before they can be sold. Since there are currently no validated alternative methods, most tests are currently done on guinea pigs, despite varying results using that method. Within the EU, a change in the regulatory framework (MDR) is underway which will lead to an increased demand for quality, safety and documentation of the products. In parallel, the new ISO standard for biological evaluation of medical devices advocates alternatives to animal testing. When the new regulations have come into force, SenzaGen estimates the value of its addressable market in Europe and the US to approximately SEK 1.6 billion.

As part of the launch, the company will also be presenting at the NABS conferences in Minneapolis, USA on September 18 and Symbioteq Biocompatibility of Medical Device in Gothenburg on October 1-2, as well as holding an online webinar in November.

SenzaGen granted its first patent for GARD™potency

SenzaGen's patent application that protects the biomarker signature to measure how strongly allergenic a substance is, has now been granted in Europe. The patent is SenzaGen's first patent in the area of potency classification. The patent's validity extends to 2036.

The technology of SenzaGen's patent is implemented in the company's testing application, which for the first time makes it possible to measure the allergenicity of chemical substances, so-called potency classification, without animal research.

“Getting this patent on the European market is commercially interesting, as there is a ban within the EU on the sale of animal-tested cosmetic products. Furthermore, to quantify how strong the allergenic effect is according to CLP / GHS is a requirement in the EU chemical regulation REACH. As the only company in the world, SenzaGen can now offer an animal-free test method for this”, says Anki Malmborg Hager, CEO of SenzaGen.

SenzaGen’s IP strategy is to protect the company’s technology in all geographically important markets. Already granted in Europe, China and Hong Kong, patent applications for GARD™skin are currently being processed by the patent authorities in countries where animal testing is prohibited or where a ban is expected to be introduced, including the United States, Canada and India. In addition, the patent portfolio includes several ongoing patent applications for GARD™potency and other GARD™ products.

SenzaGen’s GARD™ product portfolio consists of a set of allergy tests with industry leading performance and accuracy. The tests are performed on human cells in test tubes (in vitro) in combination with artificial intelligence, and replace animal experiments for the cosmetics, chemical and pharmaceutical industries for their tests on whether chemical substances in products can be allergenic.

SenzaGen receives new order of SEK 0.5 m from a recurring customer

SenzaGen has received an order for the allergy test platform GARD® valued at approximately SEK 0.5 million. The order is from a recurring customer with its own product development facility. Deliveries are planned to take place gradually during 2019.

The order includes SenzaGen's animal-free tests to assess whether chemical substances in products can cause allergic reactions to skin (GARD™skin) and in the respiratory tract (GARD™air). SenzaGen is the only company that can offer a test for respiratory allergies GARD™air. The customer will use the tests during product development to investigate whether chemical substances in their products could be allergenic. The combination of the two tests makes it possible to avoid substances with varying allergenic effects.

The order confirms that SenzaGen's animal-free method plays an important role for customers with their own product development pipeline, and specifically proves the great interest in GARD™air. The global industry for risk assessment of chemical substances seeks alternative testing methods that are more precise, ethical, provide more information, and in the long run cost-effective.

“This is a strategically important order from a customer who previously evaluated us and is now ordering a larger number of tests. The combination of skin and respiratory allergy tests is a unique offer on the market and gives customers a more comprehensive risk assessment with the possibility to identify risk of varying types of allergies. With a growing interest in our animal-free method and orders that increase in size, we look forward to continuing to contribute to the development of safe everyday products”, says Anki Malmborg Hager, CEO of SenzaGen.

EU highlights SenzaGen’s animal-free test – the world’s first of its kind to assess whether chemical substances can cause respiratory allergies

Today, International Asthma Day is being recognized worldwide. Asthma is a global health problem – over 300 million have a diagnosis and nearly 1 million Swedes are affected – a number expected to increase. The EU has invested in the development of the world's first in-vitro test for respiratory sensitization. GARD®air was developed by the Swedish company SenzaGen and predicts whether chemical substances can cause allergic reactions in the airways. The test, which is based on Artificial Intelligence and Genomics, enables not only development of safe products but also preventative measures – something that has not been feasible before. Prior to the EU election, GARD®air has been chosen by the EU for a special campaign on how EU funds are used to create jobs and growth.

Genetic background and lifestyle are factors that can cause asthma, but the working environment can also be responsible for the condition. Airway allergies can be caused by handling of harmful substances, such as different types of chemicals, in daily work. Hitherto, there have been no animal- free tests for determining the presence of chemicals that can cause allergic reactions in the airways.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Association, many asthma sufferers are diagnosed already in childhood, but equally a large number are also affected as adults – between 10 and 15 per cent of them get asthma because of their working environment. One reason behind this can be re-activated childhood asthma, but people who have never displayed symptoms previously, can also be affected.

For professionals working in manufacturing plants in the cosmetics, chemical and pharmaceutical industries it is important that the chemicals they handle are tested for how they may affect the respiratory tract. This goes for other professional groups too, such as hairdressers, bakers, painters, floor layers and other types of craftsmen. The focus on healthier workplaces in the EU is a driver for safer products and preventative measures.

There is currently a great need for tests in several different industries. GARD®air, developed by Swedish company SenzaGen, which was launched in the autumn of 2018, makes it possible to predict the risk of causing hypersensitivity with high reliability. Using GARD®air, it is possible not only to develop better and safer products, but also not least to be able to offer employees a safe production and work environment.

“When developing for example pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, risk assessment and safety tests are essential for securing the release of safe products to consumers. Furthermore, the risks associated with the production itself should also be evaluated. In cases where a hazardous substance cannot be replaced or avoided, we provide the employer with the knowledge needed to protect the staff in the best way. With the help of GARD®air, it is possible to pro-actively create a safer working environment,” says Anki Malmborg Hager, CEO of SenzaGen.

The development of GARD®air was funded by the EU research initiative Horizon 2020. In conjunction with the EU elections 2019, the EU Commission has chosen GARD®air for a special campaign on how the EU funds are used to create jobs and growth. The campaign takes place during May and June. For more information about the campaign, visit www.europa.eu/investeu and https://europa.eu/investeu/projects/new-kind-allergy-test_en.

About SenzaGen

SenzaGen makes it possible to replace animal experiments with in vitro genetic testing to determine the allergenicity of the chemicals we come into contact with in our daily lives, such as for example in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food products and dyes. The company's patented tests are the most reliable on the market and provide more information than traditional evaluation methods. We ourselves sell the tests in Sweden and the USA, and we sell through partners in several other countries. Over the next few years the company will expand geographically, make alliances with more distribution partners and launch further unique tests. SenzaGen has its headquarters in Lund in Sweden and a subsidiary in the USA.

SenzaGen AB is listed on Nasdaq First North in Stockholm (ticker: SENZA) and FNCA Sweden AB, +46(0)8-528 00 399 info@fnca.se, is the company’s Certified Adviser. For more information, please visit www.senzagen.com.

About GARD®
GARD® consists of a group of tests for analyzing chemicals' ability to start an allergic reaction in humans. By analyzing hundreds of markers, GARD® generates large amounts of data and delivers results with over 90 percent accuracy. This can be compared to today's standard method – tests on mice – which only achieves 70-75 percent precision. SenzaGen's test can also quantify the allergenic potential of a chemical substance.
